After a brief wander into the woods during the I Do I Because I Can period Black Reign return to the pure metal trademark sound of the band. Demov calls a band meeting in
May 2005 to unveil the plan for Reign's next recording, a full-length international standard metal album. A couple of line-up adjustments and three and half years later the new
Sovereign album is released worldwide through Battlegod Productions in November 2008. By far the band's best and most ambitious recording to date. The songwriting style pushes
Reign's technical boundaries with many lengthy tracks with more complex structuring than ever before. Some 'old' songs that were played live previously but weren't recorded
make the cut. These include Viking, The King of Demons (previously titled No Emotion)and a revamped The 3rd Antichrist. Songwriting is shared between Demov and bassist Sean
Veale. Drummer Bryn Morrow lends his intense technical driving power under the riffs and lead guitarist Blaze Bucannan performing all the guitar solos with impressive tasteful
technicality. Demov's vocals are his most diverse to date with the trademark yelling dominating as usual along with clean, death and high screams. And Sean's technical bass playing
melding all the elements together. The album opens with arguably Reign's best song to date Eye of the Storm with an epic slow paced intro then speed and aggression all the way to
the end of the 8 minute classic. The album also displays Reign's most melodic elements to date. Many guitar harmonies appear throughout the songs and Blaze's soloing also contain alot
of melodic style. Aswell as the first use of keyboards on a Reign recording which is used on many tracks. There's even an epic string and horn section intro to the title track Sovereign.
The longest song in Reign's catalgue is the classic instrumental Edge of the Universe clocking up 12 minutes. And Reign's most intense track ever the 8 minute thrash machine of The
Madness, an unrelenting weapon of intensity. Heavy chunks of riff appear on Demise & Sacrifice of Gods. Reign's first lyrical tribute to the female gender on the thumping Succubus.
The album closes with Reign's most diverse song ever the two part The Summonance / The Occultance taking the listener to every part of the metal spectrum by the songs 9 minute end.
11 tracks of consistent classic heavy thrash metal with interwoven melody throughout. The storm has come...

4. Falling

5. Jihad
[lyrics] |
Black Reign wander down a slightly different path on
their I Do It Because I Can EP moving the pure metal sound aside a
little to incorporate some alternative feel. A more mainstream
sounding release with a positive energy carrying throughout leaving
the songs fresh on the tongue. More open flowing chording and
simplicity allows the songs to be swallowed a little smoother than
previous releases. All the basic elements of Black Reign still exist
with the big riffs, erratic drumming wandering bass lines & strong
song writing and lyrics with the vocal performance less aggressive
with more actual singing than yelling. Opening with the rockin'
sounds of In My Opinion with flowing vocal and gliding guitar riffing
followed by the big groove of Rock On to the attitude driven angst of
the title track. Track four Falling goes from extreme chaos to
melodic-cool in the blink of an eye & Jihad (semi-finalist 2002
MusicOz Metal/Hard rock category) travels from rhythmic acoustic to
aggressive anarchy. Recorded and mixed in two days at Mainstreet
Studios mid-2002. |

The album title and scales on the cover sum up the
balance of different styles of songs on this full-length release. From
the speed and ferocity of opening track New Age Generation (top ten
ranking in Metal/Hardcore category MusicOz 2003) and closing track
Blood, to the stomping rhythms of Diesel and Evil Soul to the eclectic
serenity of tracks Paradise and Visions, to the epic theatre of
Elizabeta. The songs spread the entire spectrum of the Black Reign
experience taking you through a diverse range of emotions, moods and
colours stamped sealed with cold steel. A slick quality recording
oozing metal purity throughout recorded at both Castlerock &
Mainstreet Studios over three years with it finally being released in
2001. |

1. Rush [lyrics] 2. Fact Of Life [lyrics] 3. Unholy Father [lyrics] 4. Child Of War [lyrics] 5. Death [lyrics] |
Black Reign's debut release featuring five of the
heaviest songs of their set list at the time. A constant raw energy
runs through the entire EP with a power and aggression that leaves you
fuelled after the final note. Opening with the thrash-driven speed of
Rush followed by a loud & angry Fact Of Life. Track three is Black
Reign's first song ever written, the classic Unholy Father with the
massive epic Child Of War following suit then finishing with the dark
& heavy pounding of Death. Play it loud and you will feel the crushing
wall of sound begin to bludgeon your senses. Recorded and mixed in one
day at Studio Arts By Ed Lee in late 1994. |
